27/01: Raising Money for Haiti

On Monday the pupils and staff of Beeston Hall had a frugal lunch of rice and baked beans, followed by fruit, as a very small gesture towards supporting those who have been tragically affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

All the boys and girls contributed £1 and, along with various other contributions, including the money saved by having our frugal lunch, we managed to raise £490 for a Shelter Box.

These boxes contain supplies for an extended family of up to ten people, to use while they are displaced or homeless, for up to six months.  Typical box contents are:  10 person tent, thermal blankets, insulated ground sheets, multi-fuel stove, wood burning stove, cooking utensils, tools, water containers and purification equipment and children’s pack and lifesaving equipment.

Shelter Box has provided shelter, warmth and dignity following over 80 disasters, in more than 50 countries.  It was founded by Tom Henderson, a Rotarian and former Royal Navy search and rescue diver.  Since its inception in 2000, Shelter Box has firmly established itself at the forefront of international disaster relief.

Highly trained Shelter Box Response teams distribute boxes on the ground, working closely with local organisations, international aid agencies and Rotary clubs worldwide.

Thank you to everyone at Beeston for making a difference.
